All talk, no action -- so far

With the clocking ticking towards the Thursday afternoon non-waiver trade deadline, the Mariners reportedly are considering deals that would include left-handed pitcher Jarrod Washburn (Yankees), third baseman Adrian Beltre (Rays) and left fielder Raul Ibanez (Mets).

A report in the New York Daily News said former Mariners first baseman Richie Sexson has been texting messages back and forth in recent days with Washburn and believes the left-hander would waive his no-trade clause to spend the final two months of the regular season in a pennant race with the Yankees. There is no concrete information, though, on whom the Yankees would send to Seattle for Washburn and Mariners officials have been downplaying the Washburn-to-New York rumor mill. Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner have been mentioned.

While most of the Mariners' highest-ranking front office personnel were in Cooperstown over the weekend to witness Ford C. Frick recipient Dave Niehaus get inducted into the Hall of Fame, interim GM Lee Pelekoudas spent his weekend on the telephone discussing potential deals.

As the deadline nears, some of the so-called sellers may back off on their high demands and we may see some action. It seems as though it gets harder and harder every year for contending teams to pull off significant trades. Still, it's an interesting process and most baseball fans enjoy it.

i wish something would happen

uh...why would the Rays trade for Beltre when they have Longoria??

as a mariner fan we have always tried to trade for younger talent and then we always trade them to get even younger talent! at this rate we will never have anybody so i thinks its extremely stupid to trade beltre who is relatively young and to trade washburn whos been doing amazing lately and we dont have any pitching!

Why aren't they trying to get a lot of prospects or veterans in return for Ichiro?

Ichiro is the only reason the Mariners have as many fans showing up to games as they do. The Yankees always try to throw Melky Cabrera away, I sure hope that people realize that this guy stinks, the current season he is having is what you can expect for the rest of his career if he remains a starter.
