Manny to LA, Bay to Boston: deal official
The Pirates will be announcing a trade shortly, as they are a part of a three-team trade that involves the Pirates, Dodgers and Red Sox.
Manny Ramirez has been dealt to the Dodgers.
The Pirates will receive Brandon Moss (OF) and Craig Hansen (RHP) from Boston and Bryan Morris (RHP and Andy LaRoche, the brother of Pirates' Adam LaRoche, from Los Angeles.
Jason Bay has been dealt to the Red Sox.
An official announcement is expected shortly.
-- Jenifer Langosch
Great Arizona should just give the division to the dodgers after this trade and well doign nothing but keeping Tracy who should be gone. Wish Adam Dunn was a diamondback might match Rameriezs power

Ok so the Red Sox get Jason Bay, he is younger, faster, can cover more ground then Manny, and he is having a good season, but instead of making the team better they just made it worst, they deal Hansen and Moss, I thought they were trying to make the bullpen stronger, and they deal one of them, Masterson cant pitch everyday, Timlin's army is falling off, Okajima not as good as 07, Lopez ups and downs. I think the trade is pointless, and the Sox ended up the loser team, and why trade Moss, a good outfielder thats has show he can play in Boston... so what will happen to the bullpen now? Why not keep Manny for the rest of the season and then let him go. This time is the Red Sox being the Red Sox.

Deal makes no sense unless the Red Sox have a reliever coming there way. Seems as if the Dodgers got a steal considering the report is that the Sox are paying the rest of this years salary. Red Sox may have just bought the Dodgers a NL pennett.

i don't think that it is a total loss for Boston and it may be a gain for L.A. Hopefully Bay can keep producing for the rest of the season. Ramirez hasn't been hit as well as he does in a good season. He doesn't win a World Series by him self but he did help. That is one thing that bothered me was everyone said that the Red Sox are all about Big Papi and Ramirez, but that not true. Drew, Pedroia, and Youuuuuuklis show up and make big plays!! C'mon but its all going to work in the end. Someone will win the World Series no matter what.

Terrible trade. The Sox have effectively let Scott Boras cause them to throw away their season. Manny, Moss, Hanson AND Manny's salary? For Roberto Clemete, maybe - but Jason Bay? The Yankees must be laughing their heads off. Theo may need to put on his gorilla suit to leave work again today. And what about the bull-pen? Unbelievable. Let the rebuilding begin. See you in 86 years.

The recent sweep by the Angels over Boston just demoralized the entire organization. With Manny gone at least the drama subsides but as far as making the playoffs the Red Sox are done.

great point groolbester... see you in 86 years.. they better come out with something that will HELP the team and not make it worst... not the Bay is a bad player but they end up giving way more that they were suppose to..

This trade was more about getting Manny's negative attitude out of town than it was about making the team better. I like having Bay instead of Manny due to his age and better defense, but their offensive numbers are pretty similar...if Manny wasn't pissing and moaning all the time they would've been content hanging onto him and Hansen through this year. And Brandon Moss is blocked in Boston (Bay, Drew, Ellsbury), we don't even have a spot for Coco so I'm glad Moss will get the chance to play elsewhere.

You just dont trade away one of the best hitters of all times!!! Especially not one who has been a major part of two world series in BOSTON!!!!!! Yes, one "MANNY" does not make a team, however with this trade Boston just made other teams that much better and stronger "Yankees, Anaheim, Tampa Bay, etc." Just Ortiz, drew, youkilis and others will continue to do their job, but is much easier for pitchers to pitch effectively against that lineup. Instead of keeping Manny until at least the remainder of the season, I think Boston's management ego got in the way and the final result was an "IRRATIONAL TRADE."

people seemed to have the same type of reaction when the red sox traded away nomar for menkeivach and orlando cabreara how did that one work out oh yeah a wold series title. manny was not going to play the rest of the season he was going to just go through the motions and most likley as hes done in the past he would shut it down completley in sept. As a fan I am tired of manny being manny and welcome Jason Bay to red sox nation.

i dont see the red sox making it to the playoffs with the bullpen they are left with. bad trade on their part.

Chale, you're missing the point. The Nomar trade addressed two big needs that 2004 team had - a reliable, rangy shortstop (who wasn't clubhouse cancer) and a real defensive first baseman. Trading Manny isn't so bad - but this team needs bullpen help - AND a shortstop, by the way. This batting order is so full of holes - and now the best right-handed hitter in the last 50 years is gone. Trading Manny isn't so bad - but getting nothing for him is crazy. (Can you say, "Joe Thornton"?)

I agree with you, chale, it's too early to determine how this trade affects the Sox. The positives are, of course, that the clubhouse cancer is gone. Varitek himself said the other day that the clubhouse was tense because of Manny. The Sox players seemed tired of him too.

I think you're all forgetting that, unless I totally missed something, Bartolo Colon is coming back soon. That means that the Sox could possibly move Bucholz into the bullpen to replace Hansen. As bad as he's been as a starter I think he could become the new Tavarez for the Sox, being a somewhat reliable arm in the pen and making spot starts. Moss wasn't going to get much playing time, and Bay is a big defensive upgrade over Manny who I haven't liked at all during his whole career because of his attitude. Good trade.

Worst trade Theo has ever made. Yes, he should wear his gorilla suit. Pirates were real pirates in this deal.

No don't Sox couldn't afford taking a chance of Manny shutting it down for the rest of the season, but to give up 3 players, 2 starters, for one player seems as if the Sox are the losers in this trade. Kind of reminds one of the Gagne trade. Texas got two starters and the Sox ended up with nothing.

Our outfield is sick: Crisp, Ellsbury, Drew, Bay...a lefty and righty power slugger each, and two speedsters. We needed to trade Moss, there's no room for him. I do think the Sox should have at least tried for Jonathan Broxton too from the Dodgers. It is Manny Ramirez, after all.

In case you havent noticed Jason Bay has the same numbers as manny thus far with more home runs an a ballpark not conducive to right handed hitters Jason Bay meet the green monstah yes the redsox need bullpen help but they also need players who are going to put in 100% not walk to first on a ground ball manny has shown a lack of effort numerous times through out his time in boston theo is a man with stones and you will see he was right about this one too thats why hes the GM and we drink beer and blog

Dodgers would never trade their future closer especially since their current closer saito is on DL for Manny. Face it, Theo and his Red Sox were depressed and willing to do anything to get rid of this cancer for a slugger.

The only thing that could have made this better is for the red sox to toss in Pedroia and john lester. Come on why did the sox have to add 2 other mlb ready players and get no RELIEF PITCHING. Plus they should have offered to pay andruw jones contract what r they thinking

One of the best trades ever. Manny has sucked most of the year because he doesn't like where he is. Therefore, he makes the whole team suffer because he isn't happy. There is no way you will see Bay throwing down for tickets, punching "youk" or going half *** in left. Manny was going to go somewhere else at the end of the season anyway, might as well get something out of him. I personally think that bay makes the team better with Jacoby, J.D., and the rest. As far as him not being as big of a player, as I remember it, David Ortiz was dog poop too when they picked him up from the Twins and now look. Why not give the guy a chance?

I'm a total labour guy i'm for the workers that is if the workers does his job...Manny's performance and behavior on the field has been an embrassment. His team is not the enemy. So who has he hurt. Sitting against joba on friday the not running balls out effects all those on the team and the fans who pay their salary...Why destroy the team if the enemy is management. Management should have just said dude i'm sorry if you have a problem with us but don't take it out on our fans or our team... After the year is over we'll let you go free and clear... but now Management should punish him for that for what's he's doing to the city of boston and baseball....Pay him his money and keyshawn johnson him and let him stay home and see how that desire to get his 100 million for 4 years is affected. when teams that may want him are reminded everyday that he's at home while his teammates are bustin butt to try to make the playoff's...manny ain't being manny manny's being a quitter and that's in a team sport is right up there with gambling on sports..intolerable...boo management boo manny take your ball and go to la loser....

No question that Manny's one of the greatest sluggers. No question that he would, at times, choose not to be. So, do you like someone who admires his shot over the wall from home plate....or...who takes his time running (?) to first?
No question that the dugout's a mess because of him..a dugout housing dirt dog athletes who love the game and hustle as a team. These guys don't get the salary or the amenities that have been granted to Manny. I don't care if we end up in the cellar, but don't count on it!

Im a huge Dodger fan, and as much as I love having a big bat in our lineup, i dont understand bringing in another outfielder. Though Jones is struggling, I am still hopeful that he can come out of his slump, and now with rameriz we will have plenty of hitting to go around. I honestly dont know how Torre is goign to do this. Pierre is our constent in the lineup, and Kemp is amazing. Ethier i feel deserves a job, but is just a regular. I am hoping that the Dodgers may use Ethier now as a bargining chip and pick up a strong SS or starting pitcher. I think Rameriz can also have some power in helping the Dodgers pick up a strong SS, such as Ekstein or Cabrara. A hopeful would be a trade and get Tejada or Young, but lets not get ahead of ourselves!

maybe its time for the Dodgers to take there young outfielders and teach them new tricks at other positions....

This is a good deal for Boston. Bay is as good as Manny, and his matching numbers were put together without having the Green Monster out in left for half his games. I'm sure he's hit a lot of long fly balls into Death Valley in PNC Park that would have dropped into the Monster seats in Fenway. His average and slugging percentage should rise with regular outings in Boston, especially with bigger bats around him in the lineup. (Nobody's going to walk Big Papi so they can get to Bay, or vice-versa.) As far as I'm concerned, he's Manny without the hair. He's younger, he's faster, he hustles -- this is an upgrade in just about every way. The fans will miss some of the wack factor (I can't see Bay high-fiving a fan before spinning around to nail a baserunner), but it's not as if the rest of the team is boring. Who knows -- maybe Bay will let his hair down (after letting it grow) once he gets into the swing of things: Johnny Damon in reverse. We'll have to wait and see what Jason being Jason looks like. (Can Ortiz teach him the home run hand jive?)
One more thing: unless Bay hires Scott Boras, this ought to free up a big chunk of salary money next season, letting the Sox buy back some of the bullpen mojo they gave away. Papelbon had better stay healthy through October!

"Though Jones is struggling, I am still hopeful that he can come out of his slump"
How long are you planning to wait? Until he drops below a .168 BA...oh wait. Fact is he's on a one and a half year slump, you can't just keep hoping he does better while you're trying to win a division. Send him down to the Jacksonville Suns, I've personally had enough of him.
Fact is Ramirez fills two holes, a hitter- even better, a power hitter, and a outfielder. Now the Dodgers have three legitimate outfielders for the first time in two years (Juan Pierre has shown that he doesn't have near the arm to play outfield). Now we have room to put Pierre as a utility guy, and have a set outfield. Great trade...

Everyone downs Pierre. I feel that he is a huge catalist in the Dodgers lineup. He may not have power but he can hit. His arm is of concern, which is why i would say he is now the odd man out but you know that Torre likes Pierre speed. I think Ethier, Kemp and Rameriez in the outfield is awesome, and in the later innnings when pinch running is needed or someone to put the ball into play, Pierre will shine. Lets hope Jones comes out of his slump and is ready for either october or next year. Its just hopeful thinking.

yea i dont think anyone did...
The Dodgers have been thought to be the front runners of just about every blockbuster trade from M. Cabrera to J. Santana to C.C. Sabathia and everyone was surprised in there lack of. Now they enter into a trade 30 mins before the deadline when nobody was looking and walked away with a huge name and gave up very little in return.
I have never heard of the minor leaguer named in the trade and LaRoche has made no impact on the team. With Blake being a veteran, and DeWitt showing he is capable, LaRoche was the odd man.
I honestly thought the Dodgers would land Bay. It has been talked about for the last couple weeks, but instead, we went one step better.

Agreed about everything but Pierre being a catalyst. But when he does get on base, he does have the opportunity to help spark a rally I do concede...oh well, Ramirez gives depth and lets Juan come in late in games to pinch run/hit.

LoL Boston is getting a reputation of bad trades and its not just the Red Sox. Intrestling enough im a Sj Sharks fan and when i first saw Joe Thornton to the sharks i was so sad cause i thought the return would be Patrick Marleau and a 1st rounder but when i saw it i cried over how pathetic of a trade it was for the Bruins. The Red Sox basically traded Manny, Moss and Hansen for Jason Bay who isnt as good as Manny. BoSox fans prepare for many many many intentional walks to Big Papi.

manny going to LA just put the whole race for a the AL east into the yankees' hands. the is no one to protect that DESIGNATED HITTER known as DAVID ORTIZ... he's all alone now! do you really think jd drew can bat before or after ortiz? i mean, it's like asking ortiz to actually play a position! it's not going to happen. big sloppy is batting under 260... he has to go long just to justify his fat salary. thank the lord for this trade... NOW MUSSINA HAS ANOTHER SHOT AT 20 WINS!!!

Some of these comments are pretty laughable, honestly. This trade was all about the Red Sox getting rid of Manny Being Manny, and nothing else. And they got a solid return for the long haul. Jason Bay may not be Manny offensively, but he's no slouch either. The Pirates actually did very well here, too, getting three major league ready players and a solid pitching prospect. From the Dodger standpoint, this was a no-brainer. They needed the bat. And they got a very good one where Boston was willing to pay someone to take him, and they didn't haven't mortgage the future for him. This does create a bigger logjam in the Dodger outfield, and who cares if Manny has to do more running around in a more spacious outfield? His offense should more than make up for it. And to the person who said there was talk about the Dodgers getting Bay? Since when? And to the person who said Andruw Jones "couldn't cut it"? I guess you forget he's still one of the best defensive CFers in the game. Sure, he can't cut it offensively, but between him and Juan Pierre in CF, they cover enough ground in left-center to offset what Manny can't. Everyone wins, and gets what they want here.

To all the negative comments about Manny Ramirez, I say, sad on you! The past 8 years have been the best ride baseball has seen for some time and Manny gave us plenty of the high notes. His work out ethics are great examples for the kids and his hitting ability is for the ages. Manny's "passionate & gifted" and not uptight. Perhaps a little more respect from the front office and he'd have played out the season in Boston. I've paid a lot of bucks to sit in stadiums specifically to watch him play. I'm part of Red Sox Nation and I plan to continue going to ballparks just to see him play because I respect great talent & have the time of my life. When I go to COOPERSTOWN for Manny's first round induction ceremony, I will share in the gratification that I was there to see his greatness over time and I wasn't a fair weather fan.

to the labour guy (labor in english) ,redsoxlifer, and nancy, you think Manny acting like that just because he's Manny. no he's obviously being treated like crap from the front office. a bunch of egotisical business suit morons who can't handle some on having fun. Boston seems to have alot of trouble keeping it's good players. Ruth,Pedro,Johnny D and now Manny. Jon Lester pitched one of 17 no-hitters in baseball history. I imagine he's next. Boston doesn't suffer the 'curse of the Babe' It suffers the "curse of poor management." They Rays are now going to blast past the stupid micromanaged red sox. *Prediction - baseball season will end in early September in New England.
