Cardinals stand pat

General manager John Mozeliak just confirmed by text message that the Cardinals did not complete any moves prior to the non-waiver Trade Deadline.

Of course he didn't. He's perfectly comfortable telling the fans and Tony LaRussa that he's not going to make moves to make us real competitors against the Brewers and Cubs. What a lovely day.

We all want the blockbuster, but I feel that this was a very good move by not trading. All the asking prices were too high. Now that the hype is over maybe we can add someone without giving up too much via waivers. I feel that since the last Collective Bargaining Agreement it has made the cost of adding a player higher at the deadline. This is the agreement that made for the Class A free agent. If a team just holds onto the player then they get a sandwich pick in between the 1st and 2nd round and in the case of a Class A free agent more picks in the second, third, or fourth. So, for a failing team, why would they trade without a huge price tag. We do need to add but not at the cost that was being asked. Good job Mo, but now make a waiver deal before Aug 31. Please take a look at Paul Byrd or another starting pitcher that is having a bad year ie. Jeff Weaver or Woody Williams(whom we picked up off waivers) in years past.

I really am upset that Johnny Mo. has no balls when it comes to making this team better. Now that the non-waiver deadline has come and gone does he think he can get a player off waivers that could help the Redbirds? This boy is no Walt Jockety.

Mozeliak is just a puppet to Bill Dewitt, who could not stand Walt Jocketty, and is more than happy to sit back and count the money the team is making off of the new stadium. This team was not expected to do ANYTHING this year and now that they are truly in the hunt, but "Mo" is perfectly content with watching this team battle it out for 8 innings and watch it all slip away in the ninth with another blown save by (insert name here) !!! With Carpenter back last night and Wainwright hopefully not far off, it would have been icing on the cake to add a closer to this team and make a statement to LaRussa, the fans, and the rest of the division, especially with the Brewers getting smacked in the face by the Cubs. They can still make a run for at least the Wild Card, but 25 blown saves (and still counting) is not going to cut it in the playoffs. I am very disappointed, but can't say that I am surprised.

I am upset Mozeliak didn't make any moves to upgrade our team. Not even a lefty specialist, what's up Cardinals? We can't win without a closer, izzy needs to give it up. The front office is reminding me of the Kansas City Royals front office, they hardly spend any money on players.

As Cardinals fans we're a spoiled lot. Have you all forgotten the 70's and 80's? Granted we had three teams hit the series that decade but we had some pretty bad teams. And please, don't get me started on the 90-95 teams.

Also, you seem to have short term memories about trade deadlines. Larry Walker, Woody Williams, and Sterling Hitchcock (not in the same seasons mind you) were all traded after the deadline. This would be where the players have to clear waivers without being selected by other teams.

Patience...and please, try not to act so spoiled. We can easily slip back into the 70's, 80-81, 83-84, 86, 88-95. Lest we forget.

Well you can look at it in two ways. We are doing a whole lot better than previously predicted. We actually have a chance. (OR) The front office is cheap, stupid idea to stay quiet, we don't have a chance.

Hey guys, it's baseball, we've got the same chances as millwaukee or chicago to make it in. I still disagree on not trying to get another starter, but hey, wasn't this a crash course to begin with?

All of thee whom think that the St. Louis Cardinals do not have a chance to make it to the big dance are not true fans. You are a bunch of fair-weather fans. You will turn on the team on the slightest disorder. Who won the 06 World Series with an 83-78 record? It happens to be the same team that was predicted to be swept in both the championship series and the world series. Yes my friends it was the St. Louis Cardinals. 83-78, it was worse than even the wild card winner (LA Dodgers).

Stay positive, stay faithful, I am with 'em every step of the way good or bad. Go cards!!

I don't know how to answer the last blog. Being stupid and trading away the future is not being fair weather. First off look at who we play the next few series'; finish the Phils, LA, at CHC, at FLA for four. If you have read "Moneyball" then you would know how many decisions go into being a GM, this is just one example of what GM's go through when wanting to trade or acquire. Playing playoff caliber teams for four series in a row is another one of those factors. No one forgets the Mets when they traded Kazmir to stay in the race, but by the weekend were already out, they played playoff caliber teams. They failed, thats why we know about it. My next point is that for so many other teams to not pull the strings on trading for left handed relief, what does that tell you? Maybe they were asking for way too much. I'm not giving up Rasmus, Anderson, and another prospect. Very rarely will you see players being traded for salary. People see Jarrod Washburn and think that is how it is all the time, it's not anymore. Ever since the last Collective Bargaining Agreement. People want prospects in return for what they wold have received in compensation draft picks which are sandwich picks in between the first and second round. I'm not saying don't trade, but do it smart. Get the bargaining power on your side, wait for a team to be done and then want to drop salary while gaining prospects.

Yes, I understand your point, but; sometimes you are just going to have to make the sacrifice. Look at the Yankees, they trade away all of their youth to get great players! And guess what!? They are almost always in the playoffs each year from the undoubtbly most toughest division. At the start of each year, who is the first team to be thought of making the playoffs? Yes the Yankees. We really should go out with the same idea. After all, the yanks are only leading us in most world series victories by 19...

First of all the toughest division isn't the AL East its the NL Central.Three teams are right in the hunt. The Al East is just a Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays race

I don't know if the NL Central's the toughest division over the AL East. Maybe the most competitive in the league, yes, but there's a ton of talent in both races. And just based on a winning percentages, the East nudges out the Central. Plus, you can never count the Yankees out. They probably aren't going to bring home a trophy of any kind this year, but they're still a good team that can compete.
