Marlins call out for catching

Matt Treanor suffered a lower abdominal strain on Monday night, creating catching need for the Marlins. Treanor is expected to go on the DL on Tuesday, and the team is expected to select the contract of John Baker from Triple-A Albuquerque. Paul Hoover and Baker, for now, are in line to split catching duties. Even before Treanor's injury, the Marlins were eying veteran catching help. Names to watch are David Ross (Reds), Miguel Olivo (Royals) and Yorvit Torrealba (Rockies). Nationals veteran Paul Lo Duca doesn't appear to be in the mix. His throwing arm is an issue.

Joe,

Any chance Baker comes in and does well? He is raking in AAA and some fans have been calling for this move for some time now.

Joe;

Why are the Marlins looking at all the catchers available on the block when one ex-marlins seems to be available. Miguel Olivo is experienced and he had catched games for 4 of the 5 actuals Marlins' starting pitchers (no counting Anibal Sanchez, who is starting his rehab today and is projected to joing the retoation somewhere after the All-Star break) and also most of the relivers including our closer who did a great job last year with Olivo behind the plate. Olivo had shown that he can handle a youg pitching staff. That's what the Marlins need behind the plate, someone that can enhanse the confidence of a young pitching staff, someone that can hold or throw out most of the base runners and someone that can hit the ball hard with runner in scoring position. Olivo can bring all that at a very affordable price. If I am not mistaken he is less expensive experience catchers in the market.

Well, couldn't they move Josh Willingham back to C and move their outfield around some? They could have Gonzo in LF, Ross in CF, and Hermida in RF. That would work right? I know Willingham is not a veteran C, but he has a good bat and Gonzo can contribute whats left of him in the lineup. Or, they could try Wes Helms in LF, he's got some experience there.

I am sure Ramone Hernandez can be had!!!
