Red Sox, Pirates, Marlins blockbuster looking more likely
As reported by MLB.com's Joe Frisaro earlier this evening, the Pirates, Red Sox and Marlins appear to be moving closer to making a blockbuster trade that would send Jason Bay to Boston, Jeremy Hermida to Pittsburgh and Manny Ramirez to Florida.
Multiple baseball sources have confirmed that the three teams remain in dialogue, and according to a report by the Beaver County Times' John Perrotto, a deal could be done as early as this evening.
There is also confirmation that other players would also be involved in such a deal -- that could include the Pirates receiving a Minor Leaguer from the Red Sox farm system.
This trade would obviously make sense for the Red Sox, as they would be able to deal the unhappy Ramirez for a left fielder that has similar offensive numbers. Ramirez, who lives in south Florida, would likely waive his no-trade clause to move home for two months.
The deal would make sense for the Pirates, who would land a replacement outfielder - Hermida - who will not be a free agent until 2011. Bay is currently under contract for just one more year.
And the Marlins, who are in the thick of the NL East race, have shown in the past that they are willing to mortgage some of their future for the chance to win it now.
UPDATED: MLB.com has also learned from sources both in Pittsburgh and Boston that the Red Sox have inquired about both Jack Wilson and John Grabow as well. There have been talks of sending both Wilson and Bay to Boston and Grabow to Florida for a prospect-heavy package that could include big-time Florida OF prospect Mike Stanton (No. 2 pick in 2007), Hermida and Boston's shortstop prospect Jed Lowrie among others.
Other reports have linked just Grabow and Bay to Boston for a package of prospects and Hermida.
And if all this falls through and the Red Sox and Marlins deal directly with each other, the Pirates could very well fall back to the Rays, who still have a number of prospects to potentially offer for Bay.

This makes no sense for the Pirates... they could trade the Rays and get a great shortstop and at least 1 almost sure thing pitching prospect with some major league starts... and the pirates pitching is so terrible they would be fools to turn down the rays offer.. they already got ripped off for marte and nady, can they do it again?

i live in boston and im so sick of this crap about it him... if i could have it my way i would do this i would trade manny lugo and buccholz to philadelphia for rollins and victorino or even burrell but this would be good cuz they would get a solid infielder and they would get a young starting pitcher wich they need so i think it would be a fair trade

Bay for Brignac and Niemann would definitely be fair.. plus i live in tampa and love the rays and we are desperate for an OF.. and our farm system is so strong that this would not hurt us at all

Will Carroll from BaseballProspectus is reporting that the deal has been sent to the Commissioner's office for approval (Sox are probably paying the rest of Manny's contract).
The deal is reported to be
Pirates get Hermida, 2 prospects from Fla, 1 from Sox
Florida gets Manny and 1 prospect from Sox, and cash
Sox get Bay and John Grabow from the Pirates

word from baseball prospectus is ..........................
the Red Sox, Pirates and Marlins have agreed to a three-team, has the Red Sox getting Jason Bay and John Grabow; the Marlins acquiring Ramirez, cash and a prospect from the Red Sox and the Pirates picking up Jeremy Hermida, two prospects from the Marlins and one from Boston.

so the braves are out of the biddings?? the pirates are getting ripped off when they could have b.jones lillibridge and 2 more prospects for just bay instead of just getting hermida and giving up both bay and grabow. what a stupid deal for the pirates

bravesman: the reason the bucs won't be getting the rays prospects is because the rays have refused to deal them and never gave any indication that they would. i'm sure it's on this trade blog lol

Done deal.

i dont care about the rays but the braves not budging on b.jones is really going to hurt them. the braves even made an offer but it was immediatley shot down by the bucs. the pirates arent getting anywhere the could have gotten had they dealt him to atlanta

Sox would be betteroff trading with Marlins for prospects and fliiping them to Colorado for Holliday.
Report any abuse or spam
anywhere near what they could have gotten***
Report any abuse or spam
except for the small fact that holliday wasn't available. i can't believe the sox let that stand in their way!

It looks like pittsburg is gonna get ripped off again! they could have had much more had they dealt with atlanta or tampa bay (both offered great ss prospects in the deal). Florida and Boston are coming out looking great but the pirates are blowing it once again. if they thought they recieved a lot of heat with the nady marte trade, they should get ready for A LOT more emails. they couldnt have made a more stupid deal!

ok with the addition of lowrie going to pittsburg makes more sense for the pirates but they still would have to get some pitching prospects along with lowrie, stanton, and hermida in order for this deal not to be a total disaster for the pirates who would be giving up wilson, grabow, and bay.

Id actually like BAY with the BoSox then Manny because he's younger and a better hitter. 62 RBIs on the pirates a team that can barely get on base. Imagine him behind ORTIZ 100+ RBIs every year unless he gets hurt

so does wilson end up staying in pitt? or is he part of the deal? cause if not the sox are gonna have to put lugo back at short, which is a joke

dbacks suck so hard its unbelievable

the sox should trade manny to colorado for matt holiday. he's only 28 and has put up tremendous numbers. imagine him behind ortiz. it would be like many never left

as a Marlins fan, believe theres other talent we can let go instead of Hermida. maybe even giving up Ryan Tucker and Josh Willingham, or even Triple A homer run monster Dallas McPherson or Jai Miller.
Jeremy's has too much potential to give up and is already an everyday florida fan fav, although all Ramirez can do is bring more attraction to finalizing the new stadium.
srsly whats left in him 2 or 3 mpre seasons? not worth losing Hermida

i agree deyvid. the marlins dont really need manny's offense cuz they got great power in there lineup already they desperatley need defense cuz they cant catch a ball to save their life and although manny is a great run producer, he sucks defensively so the only team that comes out of this deal looking good is the red sox as they pick up bay to replace manny and the reliever they obviously need.

i think this trade benefits all teams. the bosox get rid of manny, and all the headaches he came with. they do however sacrifice two prospects. Jed Lowrie is going to be an amazing shortstop in two or three years. If in fact the pirates get him, hermida, and two other prospects, they may have found a good deal. Marlins get the manny package, and chances are he will remain quite fow the first few years and another red sox prospect (trust me, the farm club is very talented...it hurts to think that the Sox just gave away two prospects)

i feel we are getting a great player but it a win-lose situation for the marlins so getting manny means a two month rental and would make sense if we win it all or it could be a two month bust and lose all plus get stuck with a bill and lose two starters in the line up, unless marlins make deal to resign Manny which is not going to happpen i think the marlins should just go for Bay directly and give up hermida and two minors plus get an extra year from bay...

is this going to happen or not I'm tired of rumors i need to knowww

Keep Manny the hell away from the Marlins; he is poison and will ruin Florida's team chemistry. Besides, he could not defend left field in a little league field much less at Dolphin Stadium.

I think that Bay in Boston is a great deal. It gives them a big bat to replace manny and he is the best option given who is left. This deal needs to happen to get a cancer out of the dugout. Plus I played college ball with bay and know that he works hard, hussles and playes 100% all the time and think he would be great in the clubhouse and be a team player. He fits with the rest of the team and deserves to be with a winner!!

This would be an amazing trade for the marlins and not jsut the marlins but everyone sox get rid of manny and get their replacement in bay, pirates get their prospects for their ever rebuildign franchise and the marlins get the kind of star power that will fill the seats and add revenue to the franchise...this also add the the leverage they can use for their stadium adding that if they can bring players in like this w/o a stable home imagine w/ one...true they lose Jeremy Hermidia and a couple prospects i like Jeremy he's come up big lately but they've always said you need to give a little to get a little or in this case give a lot to get a lot just like they did when they traded lowell and josh becket for Hanley, Anibal Sanchez, and Jesus Delgado...The Marlins front office knows what they are doing they have repeatedly dismantled contending teams and built contending teams from the pieces...in the end Larry Beinfest is a Genius and one of my idols and w/ manny on the Marlins they'll make the playoffs, games will be sold out, which equals more money for the Marlins.
P.S. World Series prodiction Rays and Marlins...an all Florida Series lol...

This is going to be one of those messy yet very clean deals. Following NY, Boston rivalry will be REALLY REALLY tough if my boy JBay goes to the Red Sox. The Pirates better get a load of goods in return if this happen... but I am hoping it doesn't.

this makes sense 4 the fish. lose hermida and mayb tucker. at least they hav volstad nd maybin. nxt yr wen manny leaves move ross ovr 2 right field and maybin comes up 2 play center field.if they lose stanton so be it. havent heard of him anyway.
plus if the trade with sf happens also u can moce cantu 2 1st and call up mcpherson 2 play 3rd.
