Wilson - Dodgers rumors: Part II

One thing hasn't changed -- the Dodgers need a shortstop. Other than that, though, it depends on who you talk to as to how serious you believe that Jack Wilson will fill that void.

It's been confirmed that the Pirates and Dodgers have talked. However, according to one source, L.A. has been very noncommital on who it would be willing to deal for Wilson. GM Ned Colletti had said that the organization would consider dealing more for a shortstop that they may normally since the need is so great. However, the Pirates haven't found this to be the case yet.

Other than that, the rumors vary. Both ESPN and Fox Sports have reported that the Dodgers are restructuring an offer for Wilson. However, Monday's Pittsburgh Post Gazette cited an internal source that seemed very hesitant to count on any deal being made. As laid out in this blog before, the main problem remains a lack of a suitable replacement (internally or externally) for Wilson in the near future. The Post-Gazette article goes so far as to suggest that talks between the two teams are now "dead."

Wilson, who maintains his desire to remain in Pittsburgh, will make $7.25 million next season. He has an $8.4 million option for 2010.

Jack Wilson would help the Dodgers. I wouldn't say he'd help LA significantly, but just about there. Wilson's batting .304 this year. He also provides close to the best defense the NL has to offer at shortstop. He has hardly any speed and no power whatsoever, and he has no RBIs. Plus, he's an injury risk. Still, he's a HUGE improvement from the other shortstops the Dodgers were plugging there.

Trade for Wilson but just dont trade away any prospects. Just try and trade role players like Angel Berroa and Scott Proctor.

I personally don't think the Dodgers need a shortstop right now. A shortstop will not push this team into the playoffs. The Dodgers main concern is run production and HRs. James Loney is leading the team with 50 RBI and Andre Ethier is leading the team with 11 homers! That simply won't cut it.

It has been proven time and time again that the Dodgers "Young Guns" and 40-year-old Jeff Kent cannot carry this team to the playoffs and through the post-season. Andre Ethier, James Loney, Russel Martin, Matt Kemp, and Jeff Kent are all complementary hitters that hit for average, not power.

If it is possible the Dodgers need to go after a power hitter in the trade market. Someone like a Matt Holliday or Jason Bay would help considerably and the Dodgers would have a consistent number four hitter.

Yes, getting a shortstop would be nice, but if the Dodgers acquire a power hitter and some bullpen help then they can afford to have Nomar Garciaparra go down with an injury and Angel Berroa fill in. Also, other than Jack Wilson there is no other impact shortstop with a stick out there and Wilson does not have the offensive production worthy enough of a big trade. The fact that acquiring a shortstop is the Dodgers top priority is completely ridiculous and will not make this team a playoff contender.
